Nā Hoaloha o Lānaʻi


Dates: 8/6/13 - 12/2/13, 7 weaving hours
Size: 3/25" H x 3" W
Design: Nā Hoaloha o Lānaʻi
Materials: hemp, waxed linen (12 ply natural, butterscotch)
Notes: Gifted to Sarah Plunkett. Design inspired by the Makaloa mats of Ni'ihau, includes pineapple and kaunaʻoa lei (kaunaʻoa is the flower Lānaʻi). Fibonacci sequence incorporated into kaunaʻoa lei design.

Kaunaʻoa is an interesting plant. It is the Hawaiian "Dodder" or "Cuscuta", related to the Morning Glory. So, it makes for an interesting lei. Even more interesting to turn into a design for a basket. Below are some examples of kaunaʻoa on a beach and used in a lei:


Noho Mālie

Design: "noho mālie" (sit quietly)
Dates: 3/11/12 - 4/4/12, 24 weaving hours
Size: 3" H x 3.25" W
Materials: hemp, waxed linen
Notes: Gifted to Clifford Nae'ole in honor of Charles Kaupu and as a mahalo to all those that have been involved with the annual Celebration of the Arts event. Design elements represent lauhala mat, pua kenikeni lei, and ti leaf lei

Wahine Holo Lio

Design: "Wahine Holo Lio", Maile lei, horse, flower
Dates: 11/20/10-11/30/10, 12 weaving hours
Size: 4.5" x 6"
Materials: hemp, yarn (ripe pineapple and mango...hand-dyed on Maui by Sara of Maui Yarns)
Notes: Gifted to Azure Skye on 11/30/10 as a retirement gift. The design is inspired by the Pa'u Riders of Hawai'i (read more on the Pa'u Riders here: http://goo.gl/72Wsd).
