Nā Hoaloha o Lānaʻi

Notes: Gifted to Sarah Plunkett. Design inspired by the Makaloa mats of Ni'ihau, includes pineapple and kaunaʻoa lei (kaunaʻoa is the flower Lānaʻi). Fibonacci sequence incorporated into kaunaʻoa lei design.

Kaunaʻoa is an interesting plant. It is the Hawaiian "Dodder" or "Cuscuta", related to the Morning Glory. So, it makes for an interesting lei. Even more interesting to turn into a design for a basket. Below are some examples of kaunaʻoa on a beach and used in a lei:

Heihei Waʻa

Materials: hemp, waxed linen (12 ply maroon, butterscotch)
Notes: Gifted to Dane Ward. Design inspired by the Makaloa mats of Ni'ihau, triangles represent ʻohana, number of triangles and pattern represent outrigger canoes. Fibonacci sequence used in canoe start positions.

Many Horses - Tacoma Polo Club

Design: Many Horses

Materials: hemp, wool yarn
Status: Gifted toTacoma Polo Club on 12/18/10. Another 'Many Horses' basket. I had this one in mind for the Tacoma Polo Club as a gift for letting me gather 'Steilacoom Flower' and other prairie plants on their property last year for the Steilacoom Tribe Ethnobotanical Garden.

Kapa

Another Hawaiian basket design, 'kapa'. Freestyle designs inspired by kapa and other Polynesian tapa designs. Yarns were hand dyed on Maui.

Place Where the Salmon Jump

All My Relations

This basket design is called "All My Relations". The Arrows reflect the individual plus seven generations before and seven generations to come. The double stitch creates a subtle but really nice design. I've done several variations on this design but they all use arrows and the double stitch. Gifted to Jean Brinkman.

Cedar Box

This is my very first cedar basket from a basket workshop I took with master Duwamish weaver Mary Lou Slaughter. Mary Lou is a fantastic teacher and with her great humor made the workshop as fun as it was instructive. I look forward to future workshops with her.

Rainbow of Ribbons

Series of five baskets I wove for the Rainbow of Ribbons Pow Wow to honor women survivors (veterans, breast cancer, heart disease, domestic violence, etc.)

Canoe Journey

This basket features a Canoe Journey design that I've been wanting to try for a while now. I have some ideas to make it even more interesting so check back to see how the design evolves. Gifted to Mike Evans the 2010 Tribal Journey.

Many Horses (for Me)

This my second basket with the small horse design (the first one got away without a photo). I did this basket as a gift to myself on my 40th birthday. Yes indeed, there are 40 small horses on that basket! Some of you may know that my Indian name is "the one who rides many horses" or "rides many horses" for short so this basket seemed appropriate in many ways. It turned out a little taller than I expected but it's pretty cool overall. I'll leave it as is for now and finish it up for my 41st bday.

This is the first basket I'm posting on Basket Diaries that was an outcome of me taking a weaving class with Joe Feddersen (Colville) and Vicki Harlan(Colville) at the Tacoma Art Museum last year. It was such a fun class and an honor to learn the technique (twining) and history behind Colville style Sally Bags. It was this class that started me on my weaving journey so I am forever greatful. Hands raised HIGH to Joe and Vicki.
