Chartre Labyrinth

Whoops...WAY late on posting this little basket. Just ran across the pics again on iCloud. The design turned out great, I want to make more of these as little portable personal labyrinths ;-)

Here's a little to go with it too. Start your eyes at the entry point at the top of the basket and make your way (fairly quickly, sorry) to the center at the bottom of the basket.

Hallstatt Trio

Dates: 1/1/14 - 3/29/14. Each basket took approximately six hours.

Notes: Basket designs inspired by various early Celtic (Hallstatt era) objects and designs.

Basket on left (green and brown) was inspired by an ancient Hallstatt textile:

Nā Hoaloha o Lānaʻi

Dates: 8/6/13 - 12/2/13, 7 weaving hours

Design: Nā Hoaloha o Lānaʻi
Materials: hemp, waxed linen (12 ply natural, butterscotch)
Notes: Gifted to Sarah Plunkett. Design inspired by the Makaloa mats of Ni'ihau, includes pineapple and kaunaʻoa lei (kaunaʻoa is the flower Lānaʻi). Fibonacci sequence incorporated into kaunaʻoa lei design.

Kaunaʻoa is an interesting plant. It is the Hawaiian "Dodder" or "Cuscuta", related to the Morning Glory. So, it makes for an interesting lei. Even more interesting to turn into a design for a basket. Below are some examples of kaunaʻoa on a beach and used in a lei:

Heihei Waʻa

Notes: Gifted to Dane Ward. Design inspired by the Makaloa mats of Ni'ihau, triangles represent ʻohana, number of triangles and pattern represent outrigger canoes. Fibonacci sequence used in canoe start positions.

Notes: Gifted to Kaleialoha Roback. The design was inspired by the Makaloa mats of Ni'ihau. This particular design is intended to represent ʻohana (family, extended family, community).

Hallstatt

Notes: Gifted to Jimmie Chevrier and Adam Colvin. Design based on a 6th century BC Celtic/Hallstatt bronze bucket found in Austria. Colors are based on pottery from the same era. Examples of bucket can be found here and here.

Status: Gifted toTacoma Polo Club on 12/18/10. Another 'Many Horses' basket. I had this one in mind for the Tacoma Polo Club as a gift for letting me gather 'Steilacoom Flower' and other prairie plants on their property last year for the Steilacoom Tribe Ethnobotanical Garden.

Wahine Holo Lio

Longhouse Lines

Fibonacci-based design, 'Longhouse Lines'. It reminded me of the floor plans of several modern longhouses I've visited recently...a large room, a kitchen, an office, and - of course - two small restrooms. This is the first of 'Thirty Four Fibonacci' patterns I plan to design. Gifted to Laura Grabhorn.

Place Where the Salmon Jump

Emergence

'Emergence' design. This is the latest design in my Thirty Four Fibonaccis project. I've seen the design on quilts, posters, etc. and thought it would look great as a basket pattern. Interestingly, the further you stand from the basket the more the middle of the shape begins to look like curves.

Fibonaaci-inspired 'place where the salmon jump' design that reminded me of the mountain streams and brooks I would come across during my years doing wildlife research in the Northwest where salmon were jumping. This is the 2nd basket of my 'Thirty Four Fibonaccis' project. Gifted to Skokomish painter and carver, John Edward Smith.
